Artist Statement
My point of view is expressive, instinctive and abstract. When approaching a painting my intention is to capture the atmosphere or energy: a glimpse of or the essence of a person, place or thing. I am inspired by many of the Abstract Expressionist traditions: thick textures, a deeply worked ground, freely mixed abstract and representational forms, an approach that is painterly, gestural and intuitive. I admire and try to emulate these practices in the context of my own work.
I have a lot of ideas, I think and paint quickly so I always work on more than one painting at a time. This process prevents me from over working any one painting. Because of the fast drying time I have found that acrylic paints work best for me. Color is also an inspiration for me. I tend to play with layering colors, from translucent to opaque. I am interested in how they react to and affect one other. Texture is another important element in my work. I sometimes use mixed media elements like glass, dried flowers, paper, plastic, fabric and found objects in my paintings. When I do, my intention is to incorporate them in a natural way, almost as if they grew there. The goal is to create a surface rich with color and texture, reminiscent of a topical map or an old building, worn and full of character with cracks revealing the bits of paint underneath.
